      Description

The Salto Pilão Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) is built on the Itajaí-Açu riverbed, between the municipalities of Apiúna, Ibirama and Lontras, in the State of Santa Catarina, and has an installed capacity of 191.89 MW, enough energy to meet the demand of approximately 520,000 homes, being considered one of the largest underground HPPs in Brazil. It has a very low environmental impact, built intelligently and with a massive concentration of investments, professionals and equipment.

Compared to other projects in the sector, the generation capacity of the Salto Pilão Hydroelectric Plant is considered high in relation to the flooded area of its reservoir, which is only 0.15 km² below the water level of 319 m, with a power factor of 1.2 kW/m².

The main objective of the plant is to supply the electricity market of the National Interconnected System (SIN), always prioritizing socio-environmental responsibility and the quality established in the standards.

The main objective of the Salto Pilão Hydroelectric Plant (HPPSP) carbon credit project is to help meet Brazil's growing energy demand due to economic growth and improve electricity supply, also contributing to environmental (run-of-river plant), social and economic sustainability, increasing the share of renewable energies in Brazil's total electricity consumption.

In the absence of the project, electricity would be generated by the operation of grid-connected plants, including fossil fuel-fired thermal power plants and hydroelectric plants with large reservoirs.

      Benefits (SDG)

      7 - Renewable energy Generation

8 - Unemployment rate, by sex, age and persons with disabilities

      13 - Total greenhouse gas emissions13

During the construction phase of the project it was employed around 1,000 workers, considering infrastructure improvements in surrounding municipalities, regardless of sex, age, color and disability. Currently, for operation phase, the number of employes was reduced to 39.

The project proponent, Consórcio Empresarial Salto Pilão (CESAP), has established and maintains a structured and continuous stakeholder consultation and communication process throughout the operational phase of the project activity, in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and best ESG practices.
