      Description

Ecoprial Project is located on Route U-400 Km 6, Osorno/Chile and has been in operation since 2023, generating renewable energy and contributing to preventing the emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) into the atmosphere.
When household waste is deposited in landfills, a natural process of decomposition of organic waste (e.g. food scraps) results in the formation of a gas rich in methane, landfill gas. When the landfill gas generated is not collected properly, it causes bad odors and increases the risk of explosions, which can harm the environment and the health of the surrounding population. Instead, when the gas generated in the landfill is collected, it can be used to generate renewable energy, thus contributing to improving the local environment, health and safety.
The technology used in the project consists of landfill gas generated from organic waste in anaerobic digesters. By capturing landfill gas and using it to generate renewable energy, the project makes a significant contribution to avoiding the amount of landfill gas that would otherwise be generated in landfill.
At Ecoprial, non-hazardous organic waste is used through anaerobic digestion.
The circular economy is promoted and the project is committed to the Zero Waste to Landfill concept.

      Benefits (SDG)

3 – Communication campaigns with the population about diseases and quality of life

      7 – Renewable energy generation

8 - Promotion of sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all

13 – Greenhouse gas emission reductions

The project also allows integration with the local community, giving lectures and courses on issues related to basic sanitation, climate change and renewable energy.

The project contributes to generation of jobs and revenue for the municipality through the payment of taxes.
